At Hulme Grammar School, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education through a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as global citizens, because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.
The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area. We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme and deliver it through a bespoke scheme of work that meets the individual needs of all our children.
Pre-Prep to Year 6 cover the following six themes:
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
In Key Stage 1, our PSHE is delivered through a one hour session per week. Our lessons are carefully structured within a spiral curriculum revisiting themes in more detail as the children grow and develop. The main principles of PSHE at Hulme is to provide our children with the key skills and attributes to navigate the world around them. Alongside this, our children take part in Key Worker and show and tell sessions which compliment the Personal, Social and Emotional aspects of PSHE learning.
At Key Stage 2, we allocate one hour to PSHE each week in order to teach the specific knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced outside of lesson time as we want children to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply taught skills in everyday situations.
Our programme is constantly evolving and is tailored to meet the changing needs of our children.
