Safeguarding

At Hulme Grammar School, the safety, welfare, and emotional wellbeing of our pupils are fundamental to everything we do.

We are committed to fostering a secure, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive academically and personally. Protecting our pupils from harm and promoting their welfare is a duty that underpins our entire educational ethos.

Staff, volunteers, and visitors alike all share the responsibility of keeping our pupils safe. Working together, we ensure our school community provides the protection, care, and stability every child deserves.

Defines our zero-tolerance approach to all forms of bullying, including physical, verbal, and cyberbullying. It details the proactive steps we take to foster respect, as well as the clear actions we take to support victims and resolve issues quickly.

Anti Bullying Strategy

Outlines our primary procedures for identifying risks, protecting pupils from abuse, and taking prompt action whenever a child’s welfare is a concern. It ensures every pupil learns in a secure environment backed by trained, proactive staff.

Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy

Creates a transparent culture by setting out clear guidelines for reporting minor concerns about adult behaviour before they can escalate. By addressing small issues early, we ensure our high standards of professional conduct are consistently maintained.

Low Level Concerns Policy

Sets essential guidelines for using digital tools, internet access, and school devices responsibly. It focuses on educating pupils about digital risks, protecting personal data, and maintaining safety both in the classroom and online.

Online Safety Policy

Explains the vital link between high attendance, academic success, and pupil safety. It sets out our expectations, daily monitoring routines, and the support we offer families to help every child maintain regular attendance.

Pupil Attendance Policy

Provides staff, volunteers, and visitors with a confidential pathway to report any serious concerns, misconduct, or unsafe practices. It guarantees that disclosures are investigated thoroughly and fairly, without fear of repercussions.

I Have a Concern - For Parents

Children don’t always speak up when something is wrong, but changes in behaviour or physical appearance can be key indicators of abuse or neglect:

    • Physical signs: Unexplained injuries, frequent bruises, poor hygiene, or unseasonal clothing (e.g., long sleeves in hot weather).

    • Behavioural changes: Sudden withdrawal, anxiety, aggressive outbursts, or severe changes in eating and sleeping habits.

    • School & peer issues: A sudden drop in attendance or academic performance, reluctance to go home, or withdrawal from friend groups.

    • Online red flags: Secrecy regarding device use, drastic mood shifts after using screens, or sudden access to unexplained gifts or money.

If you have a safeguarding concern regarding your child or another pupil at Hulme Grammar School, please report it immediately:

  • Contact the School Safeguarding Team: Reach out to our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or Deputy DSLs via the school office or dedicated email.

  • In an Emergency: If a child is in immediate danger, do not wait—contact the police by calling 999 straight away.

If you wish to report a concern directly to external children’s services or have concerns regarding an adult working with children:

  • Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH): To report a concern about a child directly to local children’s social care, contact Oldham MASH at 0161 770 7777 (Emergency Duty Team out of hours: 0161 770 6936).

  • Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO): For allegations or concerns regarding staff, volunteers, or adults working with children, contact the Oldham LADO at 0161 770 8841 or via email at LADO@oldham.gov.uk.

I Have a Concern - For Students

If something is bothering you, making you feel unsafe, or you’re worried about a friend, you are never alone. You can speak to any member of staff at Hulme Grammar School—including your Form Tutor, Head of Year, or a member of our Safeguarding Team.

Anonymous Reporting: Speak Out

If you want to report a concern without giving your name, you can use our Speak Out Form.

  • Where to find it: Access the Speak Out link directly on your Pastoral Classroom page.

  • How it works: It allows you to safely share worries about yourself or a peer—whether it relates to bullying, mental health, online safety, or general concerns—completely anonymously. A member of the pastoral team will review every message.

If you prefer to speak to someone outside of school, free and confidential help is available 24/7:
