The House system is an integral part of school life to promote teamwork and inspire competition among students. Each of the four distinct houses – Hulme, Lees, Assheton, and Booth-Platt – holds a rich history and a unique character that enhances the overall experience at Hulme Grammar School in Oldham. This system fosters a sense of belonging and encourages pupils to engage in activities across various disciplines throughout the academic year.

From exciting sporting events to our winter and Senior School shows, the Hulme House system cultivates leadership skills and camaraderie. By participating in house competitions and earning House Points, students develop a strong bond with their peers while striving for excellence in all areas, creating lasting memories and a supportive school community.

A Brief Look at the Hulme House System History

The Hulme Grammar School House System has been in place for many generations and encompasses as many aspects of school life as possible including: sport, music, academic achievement and co-curricular activities. The four houses are named after prominent figures who have played a significant role in shaping the school’s heritage. Over the years, each house has developed its own unique character, traditions, and strengths, which are reflected in its leaders.

House Competitions and Achievements

Throughout the academic year, HGS students engage in various competitions to earn House Points for their respective houses. These events encompass sports tournaments, academic challenges, and creative showcases, allowing every student to participate and demonstrate their unique skills.

The House Points System rewards students for their achievements and participation, motivating them to contribute actively to their house’s success. This friendly rivalry among the houses builds teamwork and determination, with students eager to secure the coveted Needham Trophy, which highlights the accomplishments of the winning house each year.

House Leadership Roles

House leadership at Hulme Grammar School is the key to fostering a supportive environment. Each house has a House Captain selected from Year 12, who leads the House Representatives from all year groups. These leaders are responsible for planning and organising house activities, making every student feel included and engaged.

With guidance from dedicated staff members, House Captains cultivate unity and motivate their peers to participate in events. This leadership experience is an opportunity for students to develop valuable skills such as communication, organisation, and responsibility. By taking on leadership roles, students build confidence and contribute positively to the school community.

The Strength of Belonging

In the Hulme House System, students develop a strong sense of ownership and belonging within their houses. This connection establishes friendships beyond pupils’ usual peer groups, creating a supportive network throughout the school. Each house becomes a place where students can feel at home, making it easier to build positive relationships with their peers. This unifying nature of the system enriches the overall educational experience.

The House system also complements other pastoral care initiatives at HGS, strengthening the school’s overall support framework to enhance every student’s confidence.

A Celebration of the Hulme House System Tradition

Our House system at HGS brings the entire school community together to celebrate achievements and promote active participation. Each house creates a vibrant atmosphere that encourages personal growth among our students.

Through collaborative competition, pupils develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. The sense of belonging fosters long-lasting friendships, building a supportive environment where every student can thrive. Embracing this tradition ensures the spirit of Hulme continues for future generations.
