At Hulme Grammar School, we believe that a truly excellent education nurtures both the mind and body.

As a leading independent school in Oldham, we champion the transformative power of sport, outdoor learning, and adventure across every stage of a child’s journey, from Early Years through to Year 6.

A Strong Start in Physical Development

In our Early Years Foundation Stage, physical development is a priority. Children benefit from expert-led activities designed to support movement, coordination, and gross motor skills. These structured sessions also promote teamwork, communication, and confidence—laying the groundwork for a healthy, active lifestyle.

Reception: Cycling Confidence Through Bikeability

Our Reception pupils enjoy Bikeability sessions delivered by trained instructors, helping them develop balance, safety awareness, and a love for cycling. These early experiences encourage independence and prepare children for a lifetime of active exploration.

Swimming for Life

Swimming lessons, starting from Pre-Prep, are an integral part of our curriculum. Taught by qualified staff, lessons are tailored to each child’s ability—ensuring that all pupils become confident, safe swimmers. Beyond physical benefits, swimming fosters determination and resilience.

Outdoor Learning and Residential Trips

From Year 2 onwards, pupils take part in residential trips that combine outdoor adventure with personal development. These experiences—filled with climbing, team-building and nature-based exploration—develop key life skills including resilience, independence, and collaboration.

Celebrating Participation at Sports Days

Sports Days are a highlight of the school year. Every year group takes part in a celebratory day of physical activity, where the focus is on personal bests, teamwork, and sportsmanship. While achievements are celebrated, it’s effort, determination and participation that take centre stage.

A Wide Range of Co-Curricular Activities

Our commitment to sport extends far beyond the curriculum. From dodgeball and cross-country to cricket and chess, our co-curricular programme offers pupils a wealth of opportunities to explore their interests and develop a wide range of physical and mental skills. Every activity is led by passionate, experienced staff who inspire pupils to achieve their personal best.

Outreach and Community Sport

As part of our public benefit commitment, Hulme actively partners with local schools to deliver inclusive sports outreach programmes. These sessions, supported by our staff and pupils, aim to break down barriers and encourage all children—regardless of background—to embrace sport and active living.

By sharing our facilities and expertise, we help foster a love of physical activity beyond our own school community, while giving our pupils the chance to develop empathy, leadership and a sense of civic responsibility.

Leadership in Action: Sports Scholars and Sports Leaders

In the Senior School, our Sports Scholars and Sports Leaders take on key roles in shaping a vibrant and inclusive sporting culture. Whether organising school events, mentoring younger pupils, or leading outreach sessions with partner schools, these students exemplify Hulme’s values of service, leadership, and teamwork.

Their dedication enhances the wider school community and inspires others to participate fully—on and off the field.

At Hulme Grammar School, we are proud to offer a holistic education that balances academic excellence with physical development, character building, and a lifelong love of sport and adventure.
