A Generous Donation Sparks Creation of New “Purple Computer Labs” and Immersive Learning Programme

As GCSE students across Oldham prepare to collect their results this Thursday, Hulme Grammar School is proud to announce a landmark donation from Purple—a leading tech company based in Greater Manchester—which will fund a complete refurbishment of the school’s computer science labs and introduce cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) learning experiences for pupils from Year 3 to Year 13.

This transformational gift marks the launch of “The Purple Computer Labs”, a state-of-the-art learning space that will place innovation and immersive technology at the heart of Hulme’s digital education offer. The initiative reflects Purple’s commitment to investing in the next generation of computer scientists, creative coders, and tech entrepreneurs.

The refurbished lab will feature improved infrastructure, better zoning, modern aesthetics, and enhanced connectivity—creating a dynamic, professional environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and high-level technical skills. In addition, Purple’s support has enabled the school to purchase Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, 360-degree cameras, and licensing for VR software, opening up a new dimension of learning for students.

“At Purple, we believe passionately in the power of technology to change lives,” said Gavin Wheeldon, CEO of Purple. “By partnering with Hulme Grammar School, we’re supporting the next generation of tech talent here in Oldham and Greater Manchester. Hulme is exactly the kind of school that businesses should be investing in—where ambition, innovation, and community come together to create opportunity.”

Students will now be able to explore 3D worlds, take virtual field trips, build immersive experiences, and collaborate on digital projects—all from a classroom that rivals industry-level spaces. These experiences will build skills in coding, digital design, AI, and problem-solving, giving pupils a real-world foundation in emerging tech disciplines.

“Purple’s support is game-changing,” said Kirsten Pankhurst, Principal of Hulme Grammar School. “This investment is not just about bricks and mortar—it’s about opportunity. It will inspire our pupils, enrich our curriculum, and create a space where young people can imagine and build the future.”

The donation also strengthens Hulme Grammar’s outreach efforts, enabling local primary school pupils to access VR and digital learning through shared workshops and experiences. This initiative forms part of the school’s broader Public Benefit Strategy where local schools and young people have the opportunity to discover new passions and experience learning in new and different ways.

We’re calling on other businesses in Oldham and Greater Manchester to follow Purple’s lead,” said the school’s Director of Development, Marc Hornby. “This partnership shows what’s possible when education and industry work together. By investing in Hulme, you’re investing in the region’s future talent—and that benefits everyone.”
