Sonny Thomas Achieves ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction
At Hulme Grammar School, we pride ourselves on celebrating the unique talents and accomplishments of our students — both in and beyond the classroom. Today, we are thrilled to share the exceptional news that Sonny Thomas, a Year 12 student, has achieved a Distinction in his ABRSM Grade 8 Piano examination — a truly rare and remarkable accomplishment.
For those less familiar with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), it is one of the most respected music examination boards in the world. Their graded system is widely recognised as the gold standard in musical education. Grade 8 is the highest level before progressing to diploma qualifications, typically associated with conservatoire or university-level study. Reaching this level requires outstanding technical ability, expressive musical interpretation, and an in-depth understanding of music theory — skills usually developed over many years of disciplined study and practice.
What makes Sonny’s success particularly noteworthy is not just the level he has reached, but the age at which he has achieved it. To earn a Distinction — the highest possible classification — with a full year of sixth form still ahead of him, is extraordinarily rare. It speaks volumes about Sonny’s commitment, perseverance, and passion for his craft. Balancing the demands of A-Level study while preparing for such a high-level performance exam is no small feat, and Sonny has done so with grace, focus, and humility.
Head of Music, Mr Duncan, commented:
“This is an extraordinary achievement. Very few pupils attain Grade 8 during their time at secondary school, and even fewer with a distinction. It’s a testament to Sonny’s exceptional musical talent and his dedication to his development as a pianist. He should be incredibly proud of himself — we certainly are.”
Sonny’s journey reflects the core values that underpin everything we strive for at Hulme: aspiration, resilience, and a pursuit of personal excellence. While academic success is a cornerstone of our school, we are equally committed to nurturing creativity and individual passions. Whether in music, sport, drama, or science, our pupils are supported and encouraged to flourish.
Sonny’s achievement also highlights the strength and breadth of Hulme’s music provision, where students are given the opportunity to explore their talents in an environment that promotes both technical growth and artistic expression. From ensembles and choirs to one-to-one tuition and public performance opportunities, music is a vital and vibrant part of life at Hulme Grammar School.
We hope Sonny’s success will inspire other young musicians in our community to continue pursuing their own musical ambitions — and to understand that with dedication and the right support, anything is possible.
Please join us in congratulating Sonny on this outstanding milestone. His talent and work ethic set a shining example for his peers and remind us all of the transformative power of music.
Well done, Sonny — we can’t wait to see where your musical journey takes you next.
