Student learning Spanish in Greater Manchester school

Looking for an independent school in Manchester that prepares your child for a global future?

At Hulme Grammar School, we are proud to offer a forward-thinking, internationally focused curriculum. It is rooted in tradition but designed for the world ahead. That is why we have chosen to make Spanish the core modern foreign language taught across our Prep, Senior, and Sixth Form phases.

Tracey Kershaw, Head of the Languages Department at Hulme Grammar School, explains why Spanish is a key part of the school’s curriculum.

Why Spanish?

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers and is used in more than 20 countries across Europe, Latin America, and beyond. By learning Spanish at Hulme, our pupils are not only gaining a valuable academic qualification, they are developing a life skill that enhances future career, travel, and cultural opportunities.

From international business and law to healthcare, education, diplomacy and the arts, the ability to speak Spanish gives our students a real competitive advantage. As the UK continues to strengthen global connections beyond Europe, Spanish is becoming even more relevant.

A Modern Language Taught the Right Way

At Hulme Grammar School, Spanish is taught as a living, practical language, not just an academic subject. Our dynamic lessons develop all four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We place particular emphasis on communication and confidence, ensuring that students can understand and use Spanish in real-world situations.

In response to growing global demand and our commitment to excellence, we have recently increased the amount of curriculum time dedicated to Spanish. This allows pupils to make more meaningful progress and achieve a deeper understanding of both the language and the culture.

From Year 7 onwards, our pupils benefit from exposure to native pronunciation and cultural insight through our Foreign Language Assistant, who works with small groups or individual pupils from November to April. This one-to-one interaction is a standout feature of language learning at Hulme.

Language Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe that true fluency and enthusiasm grow when learning is immersive and enjoyable. That is why we offer a rich programme of co-curricular opportunities that complement our classroom teaching.

Italian Club introduces pupils to another Romance language, enriching their linguistic and cultural understanding. Duolingo Club encourages independent learning in a fun, gamified environment, helping to build daily habits and reinforce progress.

Bringing Spanish to Life Through Travel

One of the most memorable aspects of language learning at Hulme is the chance to experience Spanish culture first hand. Our pupils have enjoyed unforgettable school trips to Madrid and Barcelona, and our upcoming visit to Andalucía will immerse students in the rich traditions, history and food of southern Spain.

Senior pupils also have the opportunity to take part in work experience placements in Spain, with recent trips including exciting roles in Valencia, Alicante, Salamanca, Segovia and Santander. These placements develop independence, language fluency and cultural confidence. They are experiences that serve our pupils for life.

A Global Future Starts at Hulme Grammar School

By choosing to focus on Spanish, Hulme Grammar School is giving students a passport to the world. As a leading independent school in Manchester, we continue to invest in language learning because we understand the value it brings to young people in a rapidly changing, multilingual world.

At Hulme, our pupils do not just leave with qualifications. They leave with the confidence, curiosity and communication skills to thrive anywhere in the world.
