Three ambitious Sixth Form pupils successfully completed highly competitive work placements thanks to the generosity of our strong Alumni Community:
Pashtana in Medicine, mentored by alumnus Jonathan Schofield (Class of 1996) at the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).
Maruf in Dentistry, mentored by alumnus Dr Choudhury Rahman (Class of 2018) at the Oldham Marjory Lees Dental Practice.
Adebola in Interior Design, mentored by alumnus John Williams (Class of 1996) at the award-winning Manchester-based firm SpaceInvader.
Hands-On Experience and Industry Recognition
The strategic importance of these placements is highlighted by the school’s industry connections. Both the MRI and SpaceInvader are key Industry Partners of the Brenda Mills Institute of Innovation & Technology (BMIIT), ensuring pupils gain relevant, cutting-edge experience.
Maruf (Dentistry) was exposed to the strict clinical environment and gained advanced practical skills, performing composite and amalgam fillings on dental models.
Dr. Rahman noted Maruf was “Very professional and asked a lot of good questions. I think if he keeps working hard… he has a very good chance of getting in!”
Adebola (Design) received direct training in industry-standard software like SketchUp Pro 2023 and assisted in
creating design visualisation material and mood boards.
Jenny Crossland from SpaceInvader praised her, stating, “She was very hard working and it was great to see how quickly she was able to pick up standard design tools… We would definitely be open to hosting another placement in the future.”
Pupil Feedback
The students found the experiences transformative:
“It was an amazing placement,” said Pashtana of her time in Medicine. “I’ve gained so much from it and I don’t think anything could have been done differently.”
Maruf added, “Dr. Choudhury was amazing and he was really accommodating… He even gave me the opportunity to do some practical work on some model teeth… which was fun.”
“I really enjoyed my week of work experience,” said Adebola. “All of the staff were very friendly and helpful… I am really grateful for this opportunity.“
A Partnership in Tailored Development
“We are incredibly proud of Pashtana, Maruf, and Adebola for their dedication,” commented Arwa Berry, Head of Sixth Form.
“This success highlights the powerful, tangible impact of our alumni network and demonstrates how our tailored approach to education translates into real-world career opportunities.
The seamless link between our alumni, our BMIIT Industry Partners, and our current students is truly inspiring. The willingness of our alumni to ‘give back’ spans generations, with mentors from the Class of 1996 to the Class of 2018 opening their doors. This deep commitment is a key advantage provided by the Hulme Grammar independent school community.“
