We were thrilled to welcome award-winning author, mental health nurse, and former actor Josh Silver to Hulme Grammar School as part of our Mental Health and Wellbeing Public Benefit pillar. Known for his thought-provoking novels Happy Head and Dead Happy, Josh’s debut is currently being adapted for screen by renowned actor Taron Egerton. Hailing from Manchester, Josh brought a unique perspective to the day, sharing his experiences in writing, mental health, and his journey through the creative arts.

Josh delivered engaging creative writing workshops for our Year 9 and 10 students, with Year 9 students from Oasis Academy joining us too. The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their own creative voices under the guidance of an established author. In one activity, students were given an opening sentence by Josh and challenged to continue the story in their own style. This exercise not only fostered creativity but also allowed students to explore personal expression through writing. Several students courageously read their work aloud to the group, and it was inspiring to hear their imaginative ideas take shape.

Following the workshops, Josh delivered a Hulme Talk, which was open to both staff and students. Drawing on themes from his dystopian novels, Josh posed thought-provoking questions about society, individuality, and the role of creativity in modern life. He shared openly about his own experiences in facing rejection—after submitting his first novel Happy Head 45 times, he received 44 rejections but persevered because, as he expressed, “If nobody wants it then that’s okay because I love it.” This sentiment of resilience resonated deeply, showing students the power of persistence, even in the face of setbacks.

Josh also discussed ADHD and how he finds audiobooks more accessible, sharing that listening to books while driving or running allows him to connect with stories in a way that suits his needs. His practical tips on handling creative blocks, using rejection to fuel growth, and navigating complex topics such as appropriation and “who tells what story” were incredibly insightful for all who attended.

The session ended with a lively Q&A, where students and staff had the chance to ask questions and delve deeper into Josh’s journey as a writer, actor, and mental health nurse. He spoke candidly about his path, the challenges he’s overcome, and the personal inspirations behind his writing.

Josh also spent time with the Book Club, where students discussed their own novels and writing interests with him. One enthusiastic student even brought in their books for Josh to sign, which made for a wonderful moment of connection between the students and a professional author.

Thank you, Josh, for sharing your journey with us and for inspiring the next generation of writers and creators at Hulme Grammar School.
