100 Years of the Girls’ School Building: A Day to Remember
May 29, 2025

On Saturday 24th May, Hulme Grammar School, Oldham, Greater Manchester welcomed over 100 alumnae back to celebrate the centenary of its Girls’ School building. The occasion marked a century of education, friendship and community in a space that has shaped generations of women.
The event began with a welcome drinks reception in the Small Hall, once the original gym, where guests reconnected over fizz and laughter. There was an immediate sense of warmth and familiarity as former classmates reunited and shared memories from their time at Hulme. Archive displays filled with old photographs, uniforms and schoolbooks sparked stories from every corner of the room.
Guests were then invited on a tour of the school. For many, it was a chance to revisit classrooms and corridors they hadn’t seen in decades. From science labs to the library, each space brought back its own memories. Some paused quietly to take it all in, while others pointed out familiar corners and shared anecdotes with those nearby. While the school has evolved over the years, the essence of Hulme remained clearly recognisable.
Afternoon tea was served in the Main Hall, where beautifully set tables created the perfect setting for more conversation and reflection. The highlight of the afternoon was a speech from a former headmistress of the Girls’ School, who served during the 1980s. She spoke about the values that defined Hulme then and now — curiosity, resilience, kindness and ambition — and the role the school has played in shaping the futures of so many young women.
During the afternoon, guests were also invited to share their reflections on camera. One such moment was a special interview with Stella Woods, Head Girl in 1978, who spoke warmly and candidly about her time as a pupil at Hulme Grammar School. Her memories, from the friendships formed to the life lessons learned, offered a heartfelt perspective on the enduring impact of a Hulme education.
The day was more than a reunion. It was a celebration of shared history, a reflection on the values that continue to define Hulme, and a tribute to the generations of women who have walked through its doors. As the Girls’ School building reaches its 100th year, it stands not just as a place of learning, but as a symbol of community, belonging and lifelong connection.
Hulme Grammar extends its sincere thanks to everyone who joined in making this such a special occasion.
